The process of cutting diamonds consists of 4 phases. This process makes the diamonds able to be sold an added to rings, giving them a specific shape and better appearance. The techniques used are:

Cleaving: it consists on cutting the diamond into two different parts in order to get a more manageable size. To make easier the process, cutters usually use a mold of cement or wax while curving a sharp groove along the plane.

Sawing: most of the times diamonds need to be cut in a more delicate way and that’s why the use lasers and a phosphor-bronze blade. During this part of the process, it’s decided the parts of the diamond that will become the table (the flat top of the stone with the greatest surface area) and the girdle (the outside rim of the diamond at the point of largest diameter).

Bruiting/Cutting: through this technique the diamond is going to obtain its final shape. The difference between bruiting and cutting is that bruiting is referred to handmade cut while cutting refers to the cut with specific machines.

Polishing: is the last phase and will give to the diamond its final look, it’s placed into a rotating polishing wheel that uses an abrasive diamond powder.
